“Every picture tells a story”

Photography exhibit at Amherst Label features highlights of Bob Hug’s 40-year career

“From Darkroom to Digital” is the title of Bob Hug’s new exhibit in the Amherst Label cafeteria. The opportunity to display his photos “accelerated Bob’s plans to frame his favorites” from decades of seeing things in his unique way and capturing them with his cameras. “These photographs have been chosen simply because they are some of my personal favorites and, until now, I have never had the time or technology to print and frame them,” explains Bob. All of the 36 images were printed on a variety of photographic papers on Bob’s home printers except for one—that one (in the center) is printed on metal.

BACKGROUND

Bob Hug grew up and went to school in Long Island, NY.  He served in the USAF as a Russian Linguist (ask him about Top Secret Russian secrets and his experience with the SR-71 spy plane). He loved California and, after discharge, stayed to attend San Francisco Academy of Art where he majored in photography and minored in design, graduating in 1978.

During school, he delved into fashion photography, helping models assemble their portfolios. About this time, through a contact, he had the opportunity to photograph Rock ’n’ Roll icons like Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney and Carlos Santana.

His first full-time position in photography was with Photo Corp of America doing fashion and family portraits in studios in the San Francisco Bay area. Bob requested and received a transfer to the New England area in 1979, where he trained photographers in a number of Jordan Marsh studios.

After several years, Bob began a career in prepress and management in the Milford area. He continued to do some photographic work, photographing weddings and other events on weekends. Bob and his wife/best friend, Patti, split time between their Milford home and a family vacation place on the Westerly, RI, beach. They have a son, daughter, three grandsons and three dogs. Bob says, “Only the three dogs still live with us!”

Describing the show as a “real potpourri of things,” Bob says this is a “cross section” of his life’s work. “Some Rock n’ Roll. Some fashion and glamour. Some scenics. You can only shoot so many sunsets,” he admits. One photo is of his father, although it’s not a typical portrait. “These are pictures I’ve always liked and thought, ‘someday I’ll frame that.’ This has motivated me.”

Bob’s favorite quote about photography…

“Taking pictures is like tiptoeing into the kitchen late at night and stealing Oreo cookies.”

– Diane Arbus
