Amherst Label, a family-owned business in the Milford area since 1978, is introducing its first program for Manufacturing Day, Friday, October 2, 2015. The privately held, family-owned company employing 40 is inviting sixth graders from Milford Middle School to a fun morning visit to “the welcoming world of manufacturing.” A brief program and tour are planned plus fun surprises and refreshments. Amherst Label is underwriting the costs of the visit, including bus transportation.

“The mission of nationally-recognized Manufacturing Day is to welcome the next generation to the world of manufacturing,” explains Nye Hornor, VP of Operations and Sales. “Whether or not a person grows up to be one of the 9% of people who work in manufacturing, we would like to ‘open our doors’ and show students how cool our company is, how interesting our products are, and how supportive we are of the next generation.”

This program is designed for general interest and is not aimed at any particular academic group, according to Ruth Sterling (Marketing Manager). “One of the reasons we are excited about this outreach is that our customers represent every imaginable demographic and we are truly an equal opportunity employer. For example, our management team is about 50/50 male/female and our work force includes several family members… from several families. We make labels, tags and other specialty items and would like to share our success.”

“We hope this is the first of many annual Manufacturing Day celebrations for all of us and the beginning of a nice friendship with Milford Middle School,” says Hornor.

“The Welcoming World of Manufacturing” is an outreach to Middle School students in hopes of “inspiring the next generation of manufacturers,” in the spirit of National Manufacturing Day. Two classes of students will be arriving at the Westchester Drive production facility and will be split into six groups by their color-coded name tags. Three groups will head to the company cafeteria for a presentation entitled, “The Amherst Label Painted Picture: How to Chart Your Own Course for Success” and refreshments. The other three groups will tour six manufacturing areas of the facility, starting from three spots like a golf scramble. Students will learn about 4-color process printing, screen printing, die cutting, finishing and packaging and will have a chance to decorate packages with sample labels demonstrating the company slogan, “Everything is better with A LABEL.” Close-toed shoes are required in manufacturing areas. The students will leave with an appreciation of full color created using only four colors, and a sense of the joy and rewards of working in a manufacturing career.

Manufacturing Day is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. Manufacturing Day officially occurs on the first Friday in October—this year is October 2, 2015.

NATIONAL MANUFACTURING DAY addresses common misperceptions about manufacturing by giving manufacturers an opportunity to open their doors and show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is — and what it isn’t. By working together during and after MFG DAY, manufacturers will begin to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing, and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry.

In 2014, Nye Hornor and his wife Angela (grand-daughter of the founder of Amherst Label) attended a conference featuring Cameron Herold, author of “Double  Double: How to Double Your Revenue and Profit in Three Years or Less.” The attendees were inspired by Herold’s presentation about the value of the “Painted Picture,” a strategic visioning process in which employees commit to a company-wide picture of success three years down the road. They came home and developed the Amherst Label Painted Picture, a worksheet and video program plotting the company’s growth plans. The principles of Painted Pictures apply as well to young people planning their futures as to manufacturers. Nye Hornor will walk the visiting students through an age-appropriate session on strategy and goal-setting as part of the excitement of Manufacturing Day.
